The Disaster Management and Prevention Department:
1. Assists in planning and implementation of programmes to prevent and/or mitigate disaster in the District within the framework of national policies;
2. Facilitates the organization of public disaster education campaign programmes to:
3. Creates and sustain awareness of hazards of disaster; and
4. Emphasizes the role of the individual in the prevention of disaster;
5. Assist and facilitate education and training of volunteers to;
a. Fight fires including bush fires, or
b. Take measures to manage the after effects of natural disasters;
6. Prepares and reviews district disaster prevention and management plans to prevent or control disasters arising from
a. Floods, bush fires, and human settlement fires
b. Outbreak of communicable diseases; and
c. Earthquakes and other natural disasters.
7. Facilitates the organization of disaster management exercises annually;
8. Ensures compliance with rules in respect of private and public properties to ensure adequate protection against disasters;
9. Facilitates the provision of emergency shelters and services in the event of disasters;
10. In consultation and collaboration with appropriate agencies, identifies disaster zones and take necessary steps to;
11. Educates people within the areas, and
12. Prevents development activities which may give rise to disasters in the area;
13. Participates in post disaster assessment to determine the extent of damage and needs of the disaster area;
14. Co-ordinates the receiving, management and supervision of the distribution of relief items in the district;
15. Investigates reports and analyses the nature of hazards, vulnerability and risk situations;
16. Facilitates collection, collation and preservation of data on disasters in the district;
17. Inspects and offer technical advice on the importance of fire extinguishers;
18. Co-ordinates the organization of Fire Volunteer Squads at the community level; and
19. Assists and facilitate rescue and valuation services to those trapped by fire and other emergency situations.
